about

”Matices de Musica" marks the second solo recording for vocalist Hector Aponte.

With this new release, produced and directed by 2019 Grammy® winning producer Doug Beavers, Aponte wanted to focus more on the many different colors of his vocal, whether it be utilized within a full salsa big band (“Espuma Blanca”) or a simmering bolero of his own writing (“Antes de Todo”).

Hector Aponte, who has sung with latin luminaries such as Mongo Santamaria and Eddie Palmieri over the course of his 40 years in the music business, takes this opportunity to display the full breath of his vocal ability, nimbly negotiating soneos on the Tito Rodriguez-influenced “Como Pasa del Tiempo” and boldly showcasing his vocal on the signature theme of “Winners” for icon Frank Sinatra, with whom his father studied.

Arrangers Javier Fernandez, Ray Santos, and Doug Beavers take the “Matices” (hues) concept a step further by each contributing their signature arranging styles to the album. Beavers, who arranged five from this set, mentions:

“We really wanted Hector to shine on this one while taking some creative risks, such as the bold french horn and brass intro of “Fatalidades” and the sweeping orchestration of the new arrangement of “Winners”, here performed as a bolero.”

Matices de Musica finds Hector firmly taking a step forward in his artistic concept. On this well-crafted set of original music, you’ll find that there’s something for all tastemakers of fine afro-caribbean music and salsa.
